This March, in a collaboration with veteran photojournalist Joe Patronite I shot and edited a short documentary video in Cleveland about HIV and AIDS in the African American community there. The story focuses on three women who have lived with the epidemic for most of its 30–year history.

I’ve now spent the last two Julys tucked in a car, traveling hundreds of miles a day for weeks on end.

I’m happy with the video learning experience, considering it was a quick-and-dirty interview in a noisy lab that was really just a glorified closet full of fish tanks.

I’ve mentioned before that shooting video during still photo assignments has become a habit of mine. During a roller derby bout I had plenty of time to take some clips, so without further ado, here is Battle on the Bank III featuring the San Diego Derby Dolls vs. Team Legit.

Shooting video is something I’m trying to make a routine part of going out on assignment, even if I’m just supposed to be taking photos or writing a short article.

A week ago I was in Sequoia National Park – taking photos like always – but new to me was the experience of recording video footage with my Canon 5D MKII.

Here is my producing debut. I shot the video on my 5d mark II and then edited it on Final Cut Pro. I only had a 4 gig card, severely limiting what I could shoot, so please excuse the lack of b-roll. Also, the sound was only recorded through my camera, a big no-no to anyone trying to shoot anything worthwhile on HDDSLRS but I did what I could with what I had.

Vice has been all over the internets lately with their new CNN partnership. But, honestly, checking out this preview puts the partnership in perspective. This documentary looks amazing. I’m all for publishing Good Stories by any means necessary and Vice is definitely keeping it real with this one.
