A piñata in a window caught my eye walking down University Avenue in City Heights, and I knew I had to see if this so-called ‘pinata house’ would live up to its name.

The owner’s partner was in the shop, so we chatted a bit and she showed me around. It turns out all the piñatas in the store were made on-site. In the back room I caught a glimpse of a half-finished custom-made helicopter pinata, complete with propellor blades. My guess is the client was in the military.

This store also sold Mexican candy – the woman in the second shot was picking out some sweets to send to a relative on the east coast.

Leaving the store I noticed an interesting juxtaposition of some Disney toys and religious paraphernelia for sale.

One roll through this cheap plastic camera yields twelve photos. Of those twelve, which I took while quickly walking up and down the boardwalk in Pacific Beach at sunset, here are eight nine I’m willing to reveal.

To give you an idea of this particular street’s character, while wandering around, a man in a truck pulled over to ask me if I was taking photos of prostitutes. I thought the question was odd for a Sunday morning, but to be fair, I had indeed passed some a minute before.

When the local deluge stopped and the sky was suddenly looking clear, I made a jaunt to the nearest strip mall, where I found a pack of teenagers psyching up for their Friday night. For a few minutes I felt cool, even getting a compliment on my sweater, but then I just felt old.

Then, yesterday I was in University Heights, walking up and down Park Boulevard. While people-watching I found some of the more banal details were begging to fill a frame. I even happened on a mauve diptych while checking out my digital contact sheet.

Anyway, if my weekly routine is any indicator, “Sunday Morning Sidewalk” may become a familiar sight here on Meridian. It’s just me and my camera, pounding some pavement on a carefree weekend afternoon.

This week: Hillcrest…that hipster haven, that Prop 8 foxhole, where bright-colored stucco abounds and the homeless people say “please” and “thank you.”
