Trazzler Contest

by 9 February 2010 497 views Share

I think I wrote about a Trazzler contest before but this one also looks pretty legit. Ya ya you gotta sign up and become a fan of the sponsors and then harrass your friends to vote for your piece,  but you could win 30 grand! Wowee. And look Dave, more underpaid writing opportunities!

Man, I have heard so many bad things about Trazzler. Plus, you only win $700 and a couple of flights to San Fran at best. If the editors pick you, it's a $700 contract, which means you write to earn that, at about $25-$50 an article. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty legit if you get hired on and can pump out cheap copy on travel, but they have a history of running people's work and never hiring them.

    Sorry for my negativity Jackie!

    Hey there,

Thanks for mentioning the current Trazzler contest. Just wanted to clarify–it's not a $30 grand prize, but 10 trips (5 of which include contracts to write a batch of trips for the site) that total $30,000 in prizes. The other 5 of the prizes are the “People's Choice” prizes — those are the ones you mention: it's indeed a “harass your friends to vote” type of thing and using social media to market/promote your short piece. It's definitely interesting to see how people use Twitter, Facebook, and other ways to promote their contest entry.

Also, take note that our “articles,” if you can call them that, are short: a Trazzler trip is ideally between 65-100 words, and we rarely publish anything over 140. Compare that to other sites, who may pay $15-50 for a 500-700 article, for instance. I started out as a freelancer at the site in 2008 and enjoyed its approach and format; all travel sites (and writers) are different, though, so I don't think Trazzler may be for everyone.

We make it clear that we don't pay-per-trip. And I don't think we would want to do that, either — we hire the very best writers out there (listed at the bottom of the jobs page you linked to).

Anyway, bottom line: thanks again for mentioning the contest!

    Cheers,
