On the importance of preparation (and the glorious shots that can follow)

Since graduating college, I have had my camera on my person perhaps 90% of the time, a huge commitment that sometimes feels like babysitting. Part of this is due to working in a photo studio that sends me out last minute, but I could just use a camera from the office (of course that would mean using a 4-year-old Nikon, yuck). No, I mostly carry it around for myself and because I bike, I use a backpack-check out my baby-leaving a huge sweat mark on my back most days and adding some logistical issues of squeezing into packed bars where I don’t even want to get drunk because I have 4000 dollars worth of equipment with me.
But it’s worth it.
I got this photo rushing home to catch a ride to Nantucket. Waiting at a light, this guy slowly makes his way and I almost miss the shot because I am so tickled by the sight. I grabbed my camera and blocked traffic to get this shot. Sure, a portrait would have been better or him biking up towards me, but I’m still learning.
